Wearing Black: Special Advice For The Color Seasons

Even though black may not be in your Color Palette you can use black with the flattering colors in your wardrobe to keep it from overpowering you. If your coloring is dark and deep, black can be a winner on its own or it can be mixed with any of the colors in your palette. If you have blonde, light brown, or reddish hair, be careful about wearing black head to toe. Make sure you accessorize near your face with pearls, beads, and other jewelry in tones that work with your natural coloring. A beautiful silk or chiffon scarf in your colors will give you a dramatic and striking look.

MAKEUP COLORS

  • Remain true to the color tones that are in your makeup palette to look your best.
  • Use primer, foundation, and concealer. You may usually go barefaced or with a tinted moisturizer wearing the colors in your palette but with black, you will need as smooth a surface as you can accomplish. This does not mean wearing a lot of foundation, just one that gives coverage.
  • Many women tend to apply strong colored makeup when they wear black so they won’t look washed out. Strong makeup on the Light Cool, Warm or Soft Season will be harsh on you and only detract from your overall look.
  • A brighter lipstick in your best red or coral is helpful for all colorings. It will brighten your eyes, your complexion and put the attention on your face This is not the time to go with a “nude” lipstick, black can really suck the life out of your face.
  • Women with Deep skin tone or Vivid coloring look fabulous in a strong makeup look that will balance and harmonize with a black outfit.

MORE TIPS ON FABRICS

Look for the best fabrics for your black: The right amount of texture and shine according to your skin and body type.

  • Shiny:  patent leather, some satins, painted fabrics
  • High Sheen:  calf leather, velvet, metallic fabrics
  • Low Sheen:  microfiber, knitted silk, silk, or polyester lace
  • Some Luster:  cashmere, wool gabardine, pressed linen, Egyptian cotton knit
  • Matte:  most cotton knit, sueded silk, unpressed linen, cotton lace, felt, cotton gabardine, wool crepe, most knitted wool

FINAL NOTE

Do you know how “the little black dress” in fashion began? Coco Chanel designed her little black dress over 90 years ago in the fall of 1926 and Vogue predicted it would “become a sort of uniform for all women of taste.” And it did!

  1. Hi, Jean,
I never miss one of your blogs and the information and pics you include are awesome!
You did my colors several years ago and I rarely leave home without my color packet!
I’m a soft and cool summer and have always shied away from black but now I see ways to soften the look near my face.
I like the pic from last week where you wore a soft striped tee under a black sweater and that was a great tip.
I’ve wondered what season you are. If you’re a summer that would be further inspiration for me!
A little later I’ll send some suggestions for your 2022 Blog which I’m looking forward to.
    Sandy
