3 Things NOT To Buy On Sale

There are items that are on sale for the wrong reasons. They are there because others were wise enough to pass them up and you should too. Here are the top offenders:

Stretchy delicate knits: They stretch and stretch and stretch and get pulls too. The longer you own them the longer they get. No amount of washing and blocking will return them to their original shape. Pass them by.

Cheap fabrics and bad tailoring are obvious no-no’s, but some might fool you because the style and color are a “yes.” The fabric won’t hold up and the fit will never be quite right, making the piece a poor investment, no matter how beautiful the color and style.

This year’s trendy item, at the end of the season. On its way out as a fashion item, you may get a few wearings right now, but by next year you will be sorry you fell for the sale tag.

What To Buy Instead

Some items are worth buying in multiples on sale. Sometimes you find a deal that seems great, but you don’t have a reason to buy it right away. Here’s a guide for what NOT to pass up.

Basic T-Shirts: Neutral and colorful tees. The basics don’t go out of style and t-shirts need to be replaced regularly because they stretch and fade. If a trendy color is YOUR color, it’s time to stock up because you may not find it again for a few years.

Expensive special occasion outfits: If it’s a classic cut and color this can be a very smart investment. Even if you don’t have an immediate use for it, finding a $995 outfit in a flattering color and style for $169 is worth the investment, with money left for alterations to make the fit perfect. AND no rushing around at the last minute the next time you need such an item.

A great bag: Sometimes you find an almost unbelievable deal on a bag. The retailer can’t risk it getting damaged in storage or it’s the end of the season and they have to make room for new merch on its way. It could even be an iconic bag like an LV Speedy or a Chanel 2.55 at a thrift shop. Grab it and don’t think twice! I don’t care if it’s a weird color or has a small flaw. You will wear and treasure it for years. And you will have a great story to tell of your amazing find!

  1. Oh I’ve bought so many items “because it was on sale” and have regretted most purchases. They end up at Salvation Army or consignment shop. I’d like to think that I’ve gotten a bit more sophisticated because I now hear Jean say “are you wearing that outfit or is the outfit wearing you?” That has saved me from many bad decisions.

  2. Great ideas!
As one that has done very little shopping since Covid hit, I am out of practice regarding wise shopping. Thanks for the tips.
