Hot Tip Sheet: Dress For Your Height
If you are Tall, 5’8” or over:
Goal: Proportions that don’t make you look all arms and legs.
- Long sleeves, half-length or sleeveless are best, try very full sleeves and bell shapes. Tiny sleeves and three-quarter make your arms look longer.
- Jacket lengths should be hip length or longer. You look great in tunics.
- Use contrasting colors to break up the long line of your body by thirds or a 60%-40% split. Never divide in half, this proportion is not pleasing to the eye.
- Wider leg pants are easy for you to wear and very elegant, also flares and straight leg. Legging need a tunic to work for you.
- Skirt lengths: you can wear above the knee, and you look great in knee length or mid-calf. Full skirts can work well for you.
- Special note: are you super slim, average or grande dame? As body mass increases, the texture of your fabrics and the volume of your clothes should decrease. Use texture and volume to build bulk if you need it, avoid them if you want to slenderize.
If you are Average, 5’4” to 5’8”
Goal: Proportions that flatter by keeping your body in balance.
- You can wear any sleeve length, but don’t overdo with too much volume or you will look shorter and wider.
- Jacket lengths can be short, hip length or tunic.
- Keep the eye moving with a monochromatic look or emphasize your top or bottom with a contrasting color.
- Straight or slim pants look fine on you, even boot cut and leggings.
- You can wear most skirt lengths so long as you wear longer skirt/shorter jacket or longer jacket/shorter skirt.
- Special note: Slim, average or full figured? As body mass increases, the texture of your fabrics should decrease. Use texture and gathers or pleats to build bulk for a fashion statement, avoid these if you want to slenderize.
If you are Short, 5’4” or under
Goal: Proportions that lengthen your body so that you don’t look overwhelmed by your clothes.
- Sleeveless, cap sleeves and three-quarter length are the best. Push up long sleeves to look taller.
- Short, high hip or tunic length jackets. Don’t wear hip length jackets, they divide you in half.
- Monochromatic is best. If you like contrasting colors, wear nude shoes to lengthen the look.
- Slim, straight leg and leggings are your best looks.
- Skirts: pencil and flared are your best shapes, avoid full skirts. Above the knee (not mini) and knee length are most lengthening work with short jackets . Use above the knee with a tunic jacket.
- Special note: Are you petite, average or larger bone structure? As body mass increases use fewer layers. Bulky fabrics can easily overwhelm you. Wear dresses that follow your body line.
