The Smallest Things, a Fall Fable

You are golden with a wardrobe this easy!

When Janeen (name changed) emailed me she was kind of panicked about to what to do to update her look. She had left corporate life and started a small business working from home. She loved the freedom of working in sweats! Then her business started taking off and suddenly she had to attend a few meetings every month. She tried wearing the clothes she wore when she was in corporate life but the pants didn’t fit anymore and she was sure the jackets and blouses just looked old. A mutual friend recommended her to me and first we had a chat by phone. She thought we should just go shopping but was worried about spending money on a wardrobe and a wardrobe consultant since she was nurturing her startup and watching her pennies. I asked her how many meetings she had per month she said three for sure and sometimes five. That’s not a lot of meetings so I asked to have a peek at her closet before we shopped, just to see if there was anything that could be salvaged. Reluctantly she allowed me to have a look.

Here’s where the story gets interesting. She had some really fun costume jewelry, a denim jacket and a pair of classic neutral pumps (a personal stylist favorite). There were also 5 blouses and 2 conservative jackets that were begging for some jazzy pants and a pencil skirt. If she added a long cardigan and a pair of black leather booties she would have a capsule wardrobe that would take her through all her fall/winter meetings and some social events too. We did go shopping and came home with 5 items that we used with her jackets and blouses to make 20 outfits! Now she has those outfit photos stored on her phone so she always has something fun and appropriate to wear. Done and done, all in one afternoon, how cool is that?

The moral of the story is simple but powerful because it can save you a lot of angst and moola to rediscover what you already own. Sometimes it only takes a some creativity and a the smallest changes to make a big difference. You probably have the makings of a great fall wardrobe already in your closet. New combinations that you hadn’t imagined can give your standbys a whole new lease on life. Give yourself the luxury of an afternoon trying new combinations of what’s already in your closet. You may be surprised to see how little you can get away with buying. And sometimes the only new item you need is a fresh point of view. Happy to help you shop your closet too!
